How to Measure Yourself at Home

Accurate measurements are the foundation of a great fit. You'll need a soft measuring tape (the kind used in sewing, not a metal one), a mirror, and ideally a friend to help. Measure over well-fitted undergarments — not over bulky clothing.

Bust

  1. Stand straight with your arms relaxed at your sides.
  2. Wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of your bust, typically at nipple level.
  3. The tape should be snug but not tight — you should be able to breathe comfortably.
  4. Keep the tape parallel to the floor all the way around.
  5. Read the measurement where the tape meets the starting point.

Waist

  1. Find your natural waistline — the narrowest part of your torso, usually about an inch above your belly button.
  2. Wrap the tape around your natural waist.
  3. Keep it snug but comfortable — you should be able to slide a finger under the tape.
  4. Don't hold your breath or suck in your stomach; stand naturally.
  5. Read the measurement.

Hip

  1. Stand with your feet together.
  2. Wrap the measuring tape around the widest part of your hips and buttocks.
  3. This is usually about 7-9 inches below your natural waist.
  4. Keep the tape parallel to the floor and snug but not pulling.
  5. Read the measurement.

Shoulder

  1. This is best measured with a friend's help.
  2. Measure from the edge of one shoulder to the edge of the other, across the back.
  3. The "edge" of the shoulder is where the shoulder meets the top of the arm — feel for the bony point.
  4. Keep the tape flat against your back, following the natural curve of your shoulders.

Additional Measurements for Specific Garments

Inseam Inner crotch to ankle bone Trousers, palazzos, jumpsuits
Outseam Waist to ankle along the outer leg Trousers, wide-leg pants

Fabric Stretch & Sizing Considerations

Not all fabrics behave the same way. Understanding fabric stretch is essential for choosing the right size, especially when shopping online.

Non-Stretch Fabrics

Cotton, silk, chanderi, and organza have minimal to no stretch. For these fabrics, order based on your largest measurement. If your bust is size M but your hip is size L, go with L and consider getting the waist taken in. It's always easier to alter down than to alter up.

Moderate-Stretch Fabrics

Crepe and certain blended fabrics have a natural give that allows 0.5-1 inch of stretch. For these, order your true size. The fabric will accommodate minor fluctuations without looking too tight or too loose.

High-Stretch Fabrics

Jersey, lycra blends, and stretch velvet can stretch 1-2 inches beyond the stated measurement. For these fabrics, you may want to size down if you prefer a more fitted look. However, for Indo-western styles where comfort is key, true size usually works best.

Fabric-Specific Sizing Tips

  • Georgette & Chiffon: These are flowy and forgiving. If between sizes, go with the smaller size for a more defined silhouette, or the larger for a relaxed, bohemian drape.
  • Raw Silk: Has virtually no stretch and can feel stiffer. Always size for your largest measurement and allow room for comfortable movement.
  • Satin: Smooth and clingy — it shows every curve and bump. Choose your true size or one size up for a more forgiving fit. Structured satin pieces (like a jacket set) are more forgiving than draped ones.
  • Velvet: Stretch velvet is very forgiving; non-stretch velvet requires precise sizing. Always check the product description for fabric composition.

Size Comparison with Other Brands

Indian and international brands follow different sizing systems. This comparison chart helps you translate your usual size to Label DC sizing:

Label DC US Size UK Size EU Size Common Indian Brands
XS 0-2 4-6 32-34 XS / 32
S 4-6 8-10 36-38 S / 34
M 8-10 12-14 40-42 M / 36-38
L 12-14 16-18 44-46 L / 40
XL 16 20 48 XL / 42
XXL 18 22 50 XXL / 44
3XL 20 24 52 3XL / 46

Note: Sizing varies between brands. We always recommend measuring yourself and comparing with our size chart rather than relying on the size you wear in another brand.

Plus-Size Guide

At Label DC, we believe that premium Indo-western fashion should be accessible to every body. Our size range extends to 3XL, and many styles are available in custom sizing upon request.

Plus-Size Styling Tips

  • Embrace structure: Well-structured fabrics like crepe, cotton blends, and tailored silk hold their shape and provide a polished silhouette. Avoid fabrics that are too clingy (thin jersey) or too stiff (heavy brocade without lining).
  • Define the waist: Whether through garment construction, a belt, or a peplum detail, defining the waist creates a flattering hourglass proportion regardless of your size.
  • Flowy doesn't mean shapeless: A flowing kaftan or palazzo set should still have intentional design elements — a nipped waist, a V-neckline, or strategic print placement — rather than just being an oversized rectangle.
  • Vertical elements elongate: Vertical stripes, long necklaces, V-necklines, and front-open jackets create long vertical lines that elongate and streamline the silhouette.
  • Colour is for everyone: Don't default to black. Rich jewel tones — emerald, wine, teal, sapphire — are universally flattering and infinitely more festive.

Silhouette-Specific Sizing Guide

Coord Sets

Since coord sets are two separate pieces, you can mix sizes if needed. If your top is size M and your bottom is size L, contact our team and we'll accommodate. The matching fabric and print will create a seamless look regardless of different sizes on top and bottom.

Jumpsuits

Jumpsuits require the most precise sizing because the top and bottom are connected. Pay special attention to your torso length in addition to bust, waist, and hip measurements. If you're between sizes, size up — a slightly loose jumpsuit is infinitely more flattering than one that pulls across the bust or hips.

Gowns

For gowns, prioritise bust and waist measurements. The skirt portion of most gowns is designed with enough ease to accommodate a range of hip measurements. If the gown has a fitted bodice and a flared skirt, your bust measurement is the most critical sizing factor.

Kaftans

Kaftans are the most forgiving silhouette in our collection. The relaxed, flowing cut accommodates a wide range of body types within each size. When in doubt, go with your bust measurement — the rest of the garment will drape beautifully.

Alterations Guide

Even with the best size chart, some garments may need minor adjustments for a truly perfect fit. Here's what can and can't be easily altered:

Easy Alterations

  • Hemming (shortening): Trousers, skirts, and gown lengths can be shortened easily. Budget ₹200-500 at a local tailor.
  • Taking in the waist: If the waist is slightly loose, a tailor can take it in up to 1-2 inches without affecting the overall garment shape.
  • Sleeve shortening: Removing length from sleeves is straightforward for most sleeve styles.

Moderate Alterations

  • Taking in the bust: Possible but requires a skilled tailor, especially for structured bodices or garments with embellishment near the bust area.
  • Tapering pant legs: Wide-leg palazzos can be tapered slightly, but significant changes will alter the garment's intended silhouette.

Difficult / Not Recommended

  • Letting out (making larger): Most garments don't have enough seam allowance to let out more than 0.5 inches. This is why we recommend sizing up when between sizes.
  • Changing necklines: Altering a neckline is complex and can compromise the garment's design integrity.
  • Shortening the torso on jumpsuits: This is a major alteration that affects the entire garment structure. It's better to choose the right size than to try to alter the torso length after purchase.
